How many lumens do I need for my event?
Three factors decide: image size, ambient light and screen gain. A darkened room with a 3 m wide image is fine at 5,000 to 7,000 lumens. The same image in a room lit for a conference needs about three times that. An 8 m image or a projection onto a building starts at 20,000 lumens and climbs fast. The calculation is done from the plan, not by eye.
Does the throw distance require a specific lens?
Yes, and it is the most common thing that stalls a load-in. Throw ratio ties available distance to image width: a shallow room needs a short-throw lens, a control position at the back of a convention centre needs a long one. The lens is chosen from the room plan and rents separately from the projector.
