What is the difference between a line array and point source speakers?
A line array is a column of coupled elements whose directivity is shaped element by element. It carries further with less level difference between the front row and the back, which matters in a deep room or outdoors. Point source boxes are enough, and cheaper, in a shallow room or for an audience under two hundred.
How is the number of speakers decided?
By simulation on the room plan, not by headcount. Coverage, target level at the furthest seats and zones to avoid such as reflective walls or glass are modelled. The simulation returns the number of elements, their angles and their trim height, and is then used to get the venue to sign off on the rigging points.
