How much load can a truss span carry?
It depends on section, span between supports and how the load is distributed. The same truss takes far more as a uniformly distributed load than as a point load at midspan, and capacity drops as the span grows. Manufacturer load tables are the reference, and a real rig is validated by a load calculation, not by comparison with a previous one.
Is a rigging plan required for a suspended structure?
Yes, as soon as a load hangs above people. The plan locates every pick point, gives the load at each and is checked against what the venue structure can take. Many venues and convention centres require it before granting access to their points, and the event insurer may ask for it too.
