Frequently asked

What we get asked about moving lights

What is the difference between a wash, a spot and a beam?

They are three optical families. A wash gives a wide soft beam to colour a surface or an audience. A spot has a crisp beam with shutters, gobos and iris, for shaping and cutting. A beam gives a very tight near-parallel shaft, visible in the air and meant for effects. Many recent fixtures combine all three, at the cost of a compromise on each.

How many fixtures fit on one DMX line?

A DMX universe holds 512 channels, and it is channel count per fixture that decides, not fixture count. A modern moving light often takes 20 to 40 channels in extended mode, which fills a universe with about fifteen fixtures. Beyond that, universes are added and distribution goes through splitters or over a network.
